Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church

CChurch

SOME keep the Sabbath going to church;
I keep it staying at home,
With a bobolink for a chorister,
And an orchard for a dome.

Some keep the Sabbath in surplice;
I just wear my wings,
And instead of tolling the bell for church,
Our little sexton sings.

God preaches,—a noted clergyman,—
And the sermon is never long;
So instead of getting to heaven at last,
I ’m going all along!

  4. Hi, Antonia, I’m so fond of Emily Dickinson and this poem had been with me the last few weeks. After gardening all morning yesterday it seemed like the perfect time for this post. Glad you enjoyed! Love, Mom xoxo

  5. Hi Kathryn. I thoroughly enjoyed that poem – and the photos. The church is lovely and pretty – so different from our churches over here which are all brick or stone to withstand our weather!

  6. Hi, Liz, Thank you. This church is a typical country church. This very one happens to be located on the Northern California coast in Caspar, in Mendocino County, right next to the ocean. Most of our buildings are wooden as we live on a fault! Kathryn xoxo

  7. I love Emily Dickinson. I will be enjoying the sabbath in church and in the walking by the fields tomorrow. She is just a wonder. Could I only open up that mind. Wouldn’t it be great if we could take field trips back in time. “Alright class, tomorrow we head for Amherst to speak with Emily Dickinson…” Sigh. I wonder if the first thousand years we are all in heaven we get to go around chatting with everyone.

  8. Good morning, Red Clover! I love Emily Dickinson, too. I went to her house once. It was a very bizarre experience, because I really felt I’d been there before. A woman on the street gave us directions to the house and I knew she was mistaken. And she was. How I knew, I’ll never know. But it was a near sacred experience walking the house and gardens. Yes, I feel a special kinship with this lovely woman. I bet all gardeners do! Enjoy your church and fields today! Kathryn xxoxo
