Hi, Philip! Yes! It's fascinating. It would be truly a shock for folks at large to realize that scientists agree that ultimately the human family traces back to a woman in Africa! But meanwhile there are these clan mothers to whom so many of us can trace back. (And, of course, there are other clan mothers to whom folks with origins in other parts of the planet can also trace back. And that research is being done!) So glad you have the book. Enjoy the revisit! Kathryn xoxo

Hi Kathryn!
I actually have this book! You have prompted me to read it again.
This book is a great mix of science, and just plain drama. The story of what the world was like, say when Xenia was alive, with the wind and icy blasts, few trees in Europe, it just takes you in and you can imagine what it was like to live thousands of years ago.
The thing that really struck me is how related we all are...that we are all related back to a common mother. It was not thare was only one mother at the time, but those lines have died out. So when you are in traffic, or in the grocery store look around...we are truly one family!
:)
I am looking forward to reading this again!
:)

Hi, Julie, My guess is that if you read the book and then have your mtDNA tested you will have a different feeling about the whole thing. I've dismissed mtDNA until now as overwhelming and not that important. After reading this book I have a completely different outlook. It's a gift. Open it. :) Love, Kathryn xoox

I will order the book today. Ed and I were just discussing DNA linkages after last night's PBS program with Dr. Gates that looked at DNA linkages for a number of the guests that his show has featured in the last few years. The connection of "cousins" between his guests were in some points unexpected and in all cases, really interesting. We expect that if tested, Ed and I would find common linkages between us as well. Understanding our DNA is a great leveler. It's really hard to have racial and religious hatred when you find out you are related to the other person, you are really family. I think basic genetic DNA testing should be part of our medical history and incorporated into our educational system. Being female, I don't have the ability to be tested for the linkages back through the named family line, but I can discover my root birth mother, and from that, come to understand myself even better. America is such a melting pot. It's embracing our own "mixture" that is so important. In my case, my maternal DNA will tell only a small portion of my story as that is the least interesting part of my mixture, or so I think now. I wish I could find ways to discover the rest of the lines that I know are there. That's what biology and historical geology is all about! Hugs, Julie
